Media Arts: Block A
01/11/19
My independent project for Media arts 12 has been my first full venture into hand drawn animation. I was set and ready to do a music video of sorts and knew which of my characters I wanted to use for it. I also took way too big of a bite of the task to begin with. After Creating my Ref sheets for the characters, I moved onto figuring out the song, going through “The Red Queen” by SPG, “We need a Hero” by SPG, and finally “Thornmail” by Pentakill.
At first, I wanted to do a full 2-and-a-half-minute long animation set to The Red Queen by Steam Powered Giraffe, which I honestly thought was an achievable thing for me, even though this is – after all – my first attempt at such a thing.

I enjoyed getting the design down for James the most out of the three, as I wanted him to be the most capable of expression, changing the volume of his hair, the waviness of it, and the varying facial emotions.

Quinn, I wanted to be more serious and rigid with her outfit and over all look, in order to capture the look of “Corporate”. While I believe I could probably go back and make James’ outfit looser and more disobedient to create that effect better, I am rather pleased with their respective outfits.
Deciding on the song was another whole process, as initially I wanted to tell a sort of story from the actual song, and still do. My initial picks weren’t to set in stone about what they were as they would kind of bounce around in perspective with out any reason, and the music was too irritating to listen to on repeat. So, I fell onto a song I actively listen to on repeat, but in doing so also have to go back and create new outfits/characters for this go. As well as I am not doing the entire song, as that almost killed me mentally.
